Confirm which Philadelphia court is meant

Philadelphia court criminal records may refer to Pennsylvania or to Philadelphia, Mississippi. Pennsylvania uses its Unified Judicial System case services; the Mississippi city publishes a separate Municipal Court. The routes here are verified examples, not a directory of every place named Philadelphia. Match the state and court on your paperwork before searching.

Pennsylvania: Municipal Court can be the beginning

The Pennsylvania UJS explains that Philadelphia Municipal Court initially processes criminal arrests, tries misdemeanor cases and conducts preliminary hearings for felony cases. A Municipal Court felony entry can therefore describe an early stage rather than the final trial result.

UJS provides information for Philadelphia Municipal Court and the Courts of Common Pleas. Keep the court level attached to the docket number. If the record indicates further proceedings, locate the later case and relevant disposition rather than stopping at the first docket found.

Follow the proceeding using its identifiers

  1. Note whether the document says Municipal Court or Court of Common Pleas.
  2. Preserve the complete docket number, including its court prefix.
  3. Compare the charge, party and dates across any related entries.
  4. Locate the order or disposition for the stage that answers your question.
  5. If the relationship between two dockets is unclear, ask the filing office to identify the relevant record.

An initial charge, a preliminary hearing and a final judgment are different events. If only the first two are established, do not describe the record as proving a conviction.

Complete and email the Pennsylvania case-record request

Philadelphia’s form asks for the request date, your name, phone, address and email, a specific description of the records, and a signature with date. Select Court of Common Pleas Trial Division–Criminal or Municipal Court Criminal according to the docket; both list [email protected]. Email the completed form to the listed division address. The criminal contact number is 215-683-7700.

Describe the case number, document title and relevant filing date so the custodian can identify the item. Ask whether the requested copy can be certified for the recipient’s purpose. Keep any online printout separate from the court-issued copy.

The instructions warn that incomplete forms can delay access. If the response says more information is needed, resubmit with the missing details; the form says no further action occurs until then. If access is delayed or denied, the custodian must state the reason. Fees follow the district’s public-access fee schedule.

Read the reason before responding: an unclear request, a nonexistent record and an access denial require different follow-up. Keep the original request and the office’s explanation together. The state policy page directs Philadelphia questions to court administration or the filing office.

Mississippi: use the city Municipal Court for its matters

Philadelphia, Mississippi’s Municipal Court states that it handles misdemeanor offenses occurring within the city limits and holds sessions at City Hall. Its official page supplies the court clerk contact. Use that city court to ask about an identified municipal proceeding instead of searching Pennsylvania’s UJS for it.

If the Mississippi paperwork names a different court, follow that court’s record instructions. The city Municipal Court description does not establish access to every criminal case in the surrounding area or every document within a case.

Philadelphia Court Criminal Records task checklist

  • ✓
    Fix the jurisdiction first

Confirm Philadelphia, Pennsylvania versus another place with the same city name.

  • ✓
    Keep the court level attached

Municipal Court and Common Pleas entries can represent different stages of one criminal matter.

  • ✓
    Save the complete docket number

Use it to connect public docket information with a later document request.

  • ✓
Ask for a specific case record

The Philadelphia custodian form requires enough detail to identify the requested record.

  • ✓
    Interpret only the stage shown

An arrest, preliminary hearing, charge, and conviction are not interchangeable events.

If the search still does not resolve the question

Return to the state, court level and docket number before expanding a name search. A missing entry in the wrong jurisdiction does not clear a person’s history. For a known proceeding, ask for the specific outcome document; for an uncertain identity, keep the match unconfirmed until reliable details connect it to the person intended.

Know what the public Pennsylvania docket can and cannot establish

The Pennsylvania Judiciary Web Portal provides public docket sheets for Courts of Common Pleas and Philadelphia Municipal Court. Secure services contain additional material and are not the public route. A public docket is useful for locating the case, court level, events, charges, and disposition entries, but a requested filed document may still need to come from the Philadelphia case-record custodian.

The Philadelphia request form instructs requesters to identify the record with enough specificity for the custodian to locate it. Use the docket number and name the document or date range instead of requesting an undefined “criminal record.”
